How to Connect to a Minecraft Server
New to multiplayer? This guide explains how to join a Minecraft server on both Java and Bedrock editions.
Join a Java Edition Server
Java Edition is the original version of Minecraft for PC, Mac, and Linux. Follow these steps to join a server:
- Launch Minecraft: Open the Minecraft Launcher and start the version of the game the server requires (usually the latest version).
- Open Multiplayer: From the main menu, click the Multiplayer button.
- Add Server: Click Add Server at the bottom of the screen.
- Enter Details: Give the server a name (e.g., "My Favorite Server") and type the server's IP Address into the Server Address box.
- Save and Join: Click Done. The server will appear in your list. Double-click it or select it and click Join Server.
Pro Tip: You can also use "Direct Connection" if you don't want to save the server to your list permanently.
Join a Bedrock Edition Server
Bedrock Edition is used on Windows 10/11, Mobile, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. Here's how to connect:
- Start the Game: Open Minecraft and click the Play button.
- Servers Tab: Navigate to the Servers tab at the top of the menu.
- Add Server: Scroll to the bottom of the Featured Servers list and click Add Server.
- Enter Information: Enter the Server Name, Server Address (IP), and the Port (usually 19132).
- Play: Click Save to add it to your list, or Play to join immediately.
Console Players: Connecting to custom servers on Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch is restricted by default. You may need to use third-party tools like "Bedrock Together" or DNS workarounds to join non-featured servers.
Common Connection Issues
- "Outdated Server" or "Outdated Client": Your version of Minecraft doesn't match the server's version. Check the server details on MCDB to see which version you need.
- "Invalid Session": Try restarting your game and launcher. This often happens if you've been logged in for a long time.
- "Connection Refused": The server might be offline, or you might have a typo in the IP address.
- Firewall/Antivirus: Ensure your computer's firewall isn't blocking Minecraft's connection to the internet.
