Minecraft Server Game Modes Explained

Survival & SMP (Survival MultiPlayer)

The most classic way to play. Survival servers focus on gathering resources, building bases, and surviving against monsters. Many "SMP" servers emphasize community building, economy systems, and player-run towns.

Best for: Players who enjoy the core Minecraft experience with others.
Common Features: Land claiming, player shops, and teleportation (/tpa).

Skyblock

You start on a tiny floating island in the void with nothing but a tree and a chest of basic supplies. The goal is to expand your island, create automated farms, and complete challenges to become the most successful player.

Best for: Players who love optimization, automation, and a unique challenge.
Common Features: Cobblestone generators, island levels, and custom island upgrades.

Factions & PvP

Factions is a competitive mode where players form teams (factions), build fortified bases, and go to war with other groups. It involves "raiding" others to steal their loot and territory.

Best for: Competitive players who enjoy combat, strategy, and high-stakes gameplay.
Common Features: Power levels, TNT cannons, and obsidian-reinforced bases.

Prison

You start at the lowest rank (Rank A) in a massive prison. To escape, you must mine ores and sell them to earn money for rank-ups. As you progress, you unlock better mines and eventually earn your freedom.

Best for: Players who enjoy "grinding," leveling up, and structured progression.
Common Features: Massive mines, cell blocks, and prestige systems.

Minigames (Bedwars, Skywars)

Fast-paced, session-based games. Bedwars involves protecting your bed while trying to destroy others', while Skywars is a battle royale on floating islands. Other popular minigames include Parkour, Hide and Seek, and Creative Building contests.

Best for: Quick play sessions and testing your PvP or movement skills.

Creative

Unlimited resources and the ability to fly. Creative servers usually provide "plots" of land where you can build anything you can imagine without the worry of survival mechanics.

Best for: Aspiring architects and players who just want to build.
